Axalta, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, and Chery, a top automobile manufacturer in China, debuted their latest coating collaboration at Shanghai’s 2020 SURCAR, a world-class annual event for the global automotive body finishing industry. The coating solution comprising a high-solid basecoat and 2K clearcoat adds another offering to Axalta’s environmentally friendly product suite, including its recently introduced waterborne coating solution.
The innovative combination solution aligns with the Chinese automotive industry’s commitment to sustainability in which low-volatile organic compound (VOC), low-emission waterborne and high-solid coatings are gradually becoming the norm. The solution is specifically tailored to local auto manufacturing plants’ customer standards and characteristics, paving the way for automakers to stay at the forefront of advanced and green manufacturing, and is well-positioned to seize new market opportunities.
“Axalta is committed to developing product innovations that meet our customers’ needs. This coating solution customizes the painting process for our OEM customers and is a great example of how we innovate with purpose,” said Dr. Fucheng Yan, Product Director, Transportation Coatings at Axalta China. “We are excited to share this breakthrough product with our customers and industry peers and help support coating advancements in this market. This solution aligns with Axalta’s sustainability commitment and supports automakers in achieving their sustainability goals and lowering their carbon footprint, all at a reasonable cost.”
Chery is the first passenger car company in China to export complete vehicles, parts, engines, manufacturing technology and equipment to the global market. Chery and Jaguar Land Rover jointly invested in establishing Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Co., Ltd., which is China’s first high-end Sino-British joint venture automobile company.
“Axalta provided the perfect solution to meet our needs of reducing VOC emissions and lowering our operating costs without sacrificing the vehicle’s appearance,” commented Rongbo Shi, Materials Manager, Chery. “Through collaboration with Axalta, we can advance our manufacturing technologies to meet our sustainability and productivity goals. We hope this will benefit the broader auto industry in China.”
Held two times per year, the SURCAR Congress began in Cannes, France, in 1964 and expanded into Asia and North America in 2014 and 2018, respectively. Participants include international automotive OEM decision-makers from 20 countries and their leading paint equipment and material suppliers specializing in the car body finishing industry.
