The global stealth coating market to reach $375.0 million by 2027 by Allied Market Research

New advancements and innovative launches are paving the way for stronger stealth technology

Stealth technology can be defined as ‘secrecy mode’. A basic example of using this technology is to remain hidden from various observable factors while blending in with a new atmosphere. Also known as low-observable-technology, it is used to manufacture mobile military systems including ships and aircraft to minimize their detection considerably.

Mostly, Radio Detection and ranging (RADAR) signals are used to identify the bombarding of an enemy in air or water space. Along with this, other techniques such as acoustic disturbances, infrared signatures, and visual contact also help in identifying the turbulences. Stealth technology, whereas, functions by eliminating or weakening detectable signals. Moreover, there are various ways in which the technology can be utilized. And this article aims to provide information based on its applications and innovations that are leading the industry to grow.

Ways of application-

RADAR rebounds the signal when an unidentified object moves through the space and determines the size and location of the object. In this process, the metal body of the object works as a good reflector of radar signals making it easier to detect. Stealth technology helps to hide the reflecting surfaces.

The utilization ofRadar-absorbent material (RAM), is one of the most common processes used under stealth technology. In this process, paints are used as an overall coating and sometimes as multiple layer coating, over the vehicle. The material absorbs the radiated energy and avoids reflecting by converting it to heat. Along with this changing the shape of the vehicle and implementing a non-metallic airframe also works as effective stealth technology.

Owing to this advantage the aerospace and defense sector highly demands stealth coating. In addition, the market players also invest in further research and development procedures to have magnificent results over coating. The stealth coating industry has been through an array of modifications and is continuing to get more effective coating solutions. Moreover, there are an array of activities happening in the industry with an aim to prosper the market field. And here are some of these recent happenings that are expected to flourish in the approaching time.

Latest activities in the industry

New products launches have always been a predominant trend followed by the market players and researchers. Recently, a team at North Carolina University has created a new spray-on ceramic that is expected to be more tough and sturdy and can increase the coverage of stealth jets.

A team at North Carolina University, has recently, come out with a material that minimizes the limitations of current polymer skins. Though the innovation is still in its early stages. But its testing offered positive results and it is said to absorb almost 90 percent of the energy from radar. Furthermore, the ceramic skin could help the aircraft with problems including peeling off of stealth paints. The new ceramic skin, moreover, will minimize limitations and can be easily applied in just one or two days.

Apart from this, another research team in Nanjing, China, has developed a new stealth technology that can be used for small satellites to minimize radar detection. The new stealth technology, furthermore, decreases the power of radar signals by more than 80 percent, along with making the small satellite invisible on a radar screen. Radar operations often involve scanning the sky with electromagnetic waves of diverse frequencies, interrelating with an array of materials. The researching team, on this, stated, that the satellite can be coated with layers of composite materials making a honeycomb structure that can absorb the radar waves. Along with this, a transparent layer of signal absorption material is applied to the solar panels of the satellite which further decreases the chance of radar detection.

What does the future hold?

Coating materials are getting widely used on stealth aircraft. And it’s been years since the technology has arrived. There have been numerous modifications and advancements witnessed by the technology. However, the industry still faces certain challenges including, the extreme environment in space and the high cost associated with stealth coating. In addition, the arrival of the pandemic has also created new challenges related to the manufacturing units and supply management of raw materials. At the same time, the demand for stealth coating has been decreased to a certain extent from the automobile sector as well as other end-using industries. But as the regions are entered recovering mode, and the government bodies are assisting with relaxations over the regulations, the market has started reviving. And therefore, is estimated to elevate in the coming years. According to a report published by Allied Market Research, the global stealth coating market is expected to reach $375.0 million by 2027.

The demand for epoxy stealth coatings is rising along with the growth in the application of stealth coatings in the defense and aerospace industry. In addition to this, the rise in consumption of stealth coating in emerging economies is further contributing to the growth of the market. At the same time, the investments for research and development are increasing to a greater extent. Simultaneously, the market players are coming up with new technologies and advancements that are taking the technology to another level. And all these aspects, moreover, are projected to usher new prospects for the market to grow exponentially.
